Patrick’s Process

City scenes dominate most of Patrick's subject matter but he is not only interested in the urban landscape.  He is most interested in depicting scenes from everyday life, places many people would ordinarily see as mundane.  He often incorporates a graphic style rich in contrasting vibrant colors in order to draw the viewer into the painting. He uses his own photographs as a reference when creating his paintings. When he sees a scene that he finds truly captivating that is when he feels he must bring it to life on canvas.

A painting will begin with a detailed drawing and laying down paint for the sky. Next, flat layers of paint are applied so that the whole canvas is covered. There is little to no blending for this stage. Once the canvas is covered it’s a matter of mixing color and painting each area using tiny brushes. One day a car will be painted, the next the side of a brick building.  This second layer takes up the bulk of the time as it involves extreme detail and patience.
